Eyes of Innocence...We never look with eyes of innocence, we always look through our hopes, fears, thoughts and experiences. These form a wall in front of our eyes; a troubling like the ripples on a lake that distort our reflection of reality. Seldom so we look into the eyes of our fellow men and women, and when we do, we find ourselves stopped by this wall; but on a rare occasion we may meet someone and look into the eyes, and to our surprise do not find ourselves stopped, but rather invited to enter into endless rolling fields and routes, vistas of innocent beauty. The eyes are the windows of the interior. With most of us, when we look through our own eyes, or look into other people's eyes, there is a lot of material in them which is very dense - the past, the present, the future, thoughts, emotions, experiences. But sometimes somebody can be out of that frame and therefore the eyes have a very different clarity. They have a clarity where you can go inside the eyes and you do not get hit by the experiences and by the past of that person. Their eyes are like a tunnel that opens out into endless vistas. There is a long range in there which is not visible in most people, because their range of thought and experience is so short, their vision is literally very short. That long vision means that the person who has that long vision thinks through a lot of different dimensions. It does not stop you like a wall. It does not hit you when you look in there. We never look at each other, and if we do, there is straight away a fear, a mutual fear, a rejection, a hiding; people hide inside because there are a lot of things to hide. While if a person is really innocent there is nothing to hide. Their eyes are like the eyes of a baby, clear, and you can go in there and they are like a whirlpool that draws you in. Grown ups so not have that kind of inviting look in their eyes. The key word in all this is "judgment", When we look at life, at the world, as it comes into our eyes, we judge, and the judgment is what we throw back at what we are seeing and hearing. It is this judgment, which is the wall. But if we can receive what comes from outside and not have a reaction, not judge, not throw the ball back, then we only receive and so what we receive is unclouded by our hopes, fears, thoughts, emotions, and experiences. Therefore what we receive is a clear reflection. Dona Holleman
