O C E A N K A Y A K I N G When I was a young girl my father promised me a boat if I could swim from our island on Anstruther Lake in Northern Ontario, to the mainland. That night I dreamt that my mother was baking a cake and had run out of sugar, so I jumped in the lake, swam to the mainland, borrowed a cup of sugar, swam back to our island and proudly presented the sugar to my mother. The next morning I woke up and told my father I was swimming to the mainland. I jumped in the lake and off I went. Now, my father hadn't anticipated or financially prepared for my achievement, thinking it would happen months later, so he did what he could at the time, he bought me a canoe. Already like a fish in water, I soon discovered a new found love for the quiet gentleness of the paddle and I spent my childhood paddling around Anstruther and surrounding lakes in my most prized possession, my canoe. My favourite thing to do was to wake up before anyone else, and paddle out to watch the sunrise burn the morning mist off the lake. This is one of the most treasured memories of my youth. I truly felt I was one with everything around me. When I moved to British Columbia my world grew to include kayaking, and I soon realized similar elements of yoga and kayaking. I began to explore how yoga could be used as an essential tool for kayakers. I have since developed a program specifically designed to help prepare for a day on the water, and to help recover from time spent in your kayak. I am excited about the connection between yoga and kayaking. "Yoga is meditation in motion, as is kayaking." The asanas (postures) help you improve your focus, your strength, your skills, and your inner peace. Yoga teaches you how to use your core, so you don't get tired, and how to use the method of wei-wu-wei, and the hara, to connect to the inner energy body. The water within becomes as light and fluid as the water on which you travel. The adventures we offer are about much more than the physical aspects of yoga and kayaking, they are about the inner adventure that yoga and kayaking can take you on, the connection you have to nature, and the harmony that is created when you are one with the whole.
